In Texas last Tuesday, Mitt Romney finally secured enough delegates to give him the Republican Party nomination for this years US Presidential election. The contest had effectively ended weeks ago, but the former Massachusetts governor still had to collect at least 1,144 delegates to be assured of the candidacy. Now that the nomination is secure, Romney is expected to step up his attacks on President Barack Obama.

After the results of the Texas primary came in, Romney gave a speech in which he suggested that Obamas time as president has been a failure. Our party has come together with the goal of putting the failures of the last three and a half years behind usK. Whatever challenges lie ahead, we will settle for nothing less than getting America back on the path to full employment and prosperity, he said.

Romney had to share his day of triumph with real estate tycoon Donald Trump, who had organized a fundraiser for him. At the event, Trump sought to reopen the issue of Obamas birth, suggesting that the birth certificate stating that the president was born in Hawaii is fake. Romney tried to distance himself from the comments, saying that he believes Obama is American.
