看來將表現較差的孩童送到排名較後段的學校比較好。
根據倫敦政治經濟學院的研究指出,由於在同儕中排行較低而失去信心可能會嚴重影響學生的長期表現。分析了英國超過兩百萬名學生的考試成績數據,並調查了一萬五千名孩童的信心程度,發現小學班上排名最前的孩童通常國高中都會表現表現比較好。
研究人員做出結論說孩童在年齡較小時的學業成功讓他們能夠對自己的能力更有自信。另外,他們主張由學業表現排名較前中獲得的額外信心,等同於排名較低的孩童額外學習六個月的努力。
研究結果跟常見的假設不同,普遍認為同儕若成績較優異則能讓學習較緩的同學表現變佳。研究作者理查墨菲回應說較不聰明的學生加入排名較後面的學校會比較理想,他們在那的表現相對而言較佳,比起在頂尖學校表現卻吊車尾來得好。

Apparently, it is better to send weaker children to lower ranked schools.
According to a study by the London School of Economics, the loss of confidence due to low class rank can have serious long-term implications for students. After analyzing test data of over two million students in England and conducting a survey on confidence among 15,000 children, it was found that children who were at the top of the class in elementary school generally performed better in high school.
The researchers concluded that the childrens academic success earlier on had allowed them to be more confident in their abilities. Moreover, they claimed that the extra confidence gained from being ranked highly academically was worth the equivalent of six months extra schooling compared with a low-ranked child.
The findings were inconsistent with the common assumption that being surrounded by high-achieving peers can boost the performance of slower classmates. Study author Richard Murphy commented that less intelligent students may actually be better off attending lower ranked schools where they can perform relatively well than falling behind bright classmates at top schools.
